1. Who is the Georgia Association of Assessing Officials (GAAO)? A. The GAAO is a 501(c)(6) tax-exempt organization created to promote integrity & professionalism in assessment administration through education, leadership, and cooperation. 2. When was GAAO Established? A. 1948 3. What is the role of the assessor? A. The assessor is responsible for estimating the value of property, which determines assessed valuation. The assessor does not determine property taxes. Instead, the assessed valuation determines the overall share of taxes to be paid. Because assessment affects property taxes, it is important that assessed value be accurate and fair. 4. How can I find out more information about my own valuations? A. You can either contact your county’s Tax Assessors office or click this link to be redirected to QPublic’s website (Please note: Not every county is on the QPublic platform). 5. I have general questions regarding the valuation process, the appeals process and/or when I can file a property return. Where can I find this information? A. The Georgia Department of Revenue’s Local Government Services Division has set up an FAQ page to answer general Real and Personal property questions.
